ARTIST’S STATEMENT

I create paintings, drawings, and illustrations of places from my hometown. I use the spaces that I have interacted with and grew up around as my inspiration, because it adds to the authenticity and genuineness of my artwork. Verity is central to everything I make, whether painting, drawing, or illustration. I approach these scenes with an unbiased eye, not glorifying nor beautifying, but rather capturing it in its objective truth. My work looks at American landscapes and how the objects within those landscapes change the content of the space and speak to local and national cultural identities.

When selecting a composition, I like to spend a moment with the space and closely observe the objects around me and how they sit within their environment. I find my subjects while out for walks or while running errands, and I photograph the spaces as I come across them. I look for narratives within the space, like lost toys or objects for sale in display cases, and draw upon them within my work. The undertones of humor and melancholy visible within my compositions are derived from the natural landscape itself. In capturing these moments in their reality, my work calls for reflection.
